Background: In patients with end-stage liver disease, hypogonadism and Erectile Dysfunction (ED) are often seen.
Aim: To determine the incidence of ED pre and post-liver transplantation with the correlation to the change of sex hormones from a Chinese cohort.
Patients and Methods: All male adult recipients enlisted for liver transplantation will be recruited to participate in a cross-sectional cohort questionnaire (international index of Erectile Function IIEF Questionnaire-version 5) pre and post LT from January 2012 to December 2016. Serum sex hormones would be checked before each of the survey.
Results: There were 50 patients recruited and 28 patients with liver transplant done during the study period. 16 patients were delisted due to deterioration of the liver diseases and there were 6 patients still waiting at the time of writing of this abstract. Patients with liver transplant done had significant reduction of serum 17-OH progesterone (p=0.019), prolactin (p<0.001), testosterone (p=0.017) and 17-beta-estradiol (p<0.001) when compared to preoperative level. There was also significant improvement of score of IIEF-5 at postoperative first month.
Conclusion: Liver Transplantation can correct hypogonadism with normalization of sexual hormones and ED. Sexual dysfunction should be taken into one of the considerations as an indication of success in liver transplantation apart from survival outcomes.
