Cardiothoracic Surgeon Associate Professor Director of Lung Transplantation, Advocate Health, Chicago An expert in adult thoracic surgery and lung transplantation, Christopher H. Wigfield, MD, cares for patients with a wide range of cardiothoracic diseases. Trained in the complete spectrum of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures, his experience includes coronary and heart valve surgeries, assist devices and congenital cardiac surgeries. His recent sub-specialization has included complex resections for lung cancer, mediastinal and pleural conditions, as well as chest wall tumors and defects. Whenever possible, he uses minimally invasive approaches in order to minimize tissue trauma and shorten recovery time. Dr. Wigfield’s clinical research focuses on lung transplantation and robotic assisted thoracic innovation. He also has studied the impact of donor and procurement related topics in lung transplantation and regenerative tissue support in thoracic surgery. Dr. Wigfield has a strong interest in medical education, mentoring medical students, residents, physician assistants and post-doctoral students in both clinical and research settings. Additionally, Dr. Wigfield has contributed significantly to medical literature, publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on lung transplantation. In addition, he is frequently invited to present his work at national and international conferences on lung transplantation, thoracic trauma and surgery. Dr. Wigfield has been the regional representative for UNOS and completed a five year term as Director for Educational Affairs at the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
